There are only a few historical sources that remain prior to the 1800’s. It, however, can be determined that Thai Massage combines at least 5 important layers of historical influence.
Buddhism
In Buddhism Dr. Shivaga Komarapaj is celebrated and honoured as the forefather of Thai Massage. He is told to have been Buddhas personal doctor and while travelling through Asia together he gained healing knowledge from all the different cultures he passed.
Over centuries, monks have been the main practitioners of Traditional Thai Massage throughout Thailand. Through them, a lot of important knowledge of herbal medicine, spiritual practice and Thai Massage was passed on over generations.
Ayurveda
Ayurveda spread from India all over Asia. Thai medical texts frequently contain references to Ayurveda principles.
Yoga
There is a close connection between Yoga and Thai Massage postures. Several sen lines (energy lines of Thai Massage) have clear parallels with the nadi channels from the Indian yoga tradition, sometimes even using the same names.
Chinese cultural influences
Chinese Medicine and its meridians and acupressure points are closely aligned with the sen lines.
Indigenous Thai Medicine
The practice of Thai Massage as we know it today, clearly incorporates a wide variety of indigenous Thai Healing Arts.
